Xubuntu 12.10 is out! Xubuntu is a Ubuntu based GNU/Linux distribution that focuses on XFCE desktop environment.
So, I installed the xubuntu-desktop package on my Lubuntu netbook, but when I went to login to a xubuntu session nothing happened. The screen simply went momentarily blank and then came up with the original login screen again.
I tried with xfce session and got the same result.
Ok, I installed Xubuntu 11.10 on my Toshiba Satalite C50 dual booted with windows 7. After that I eventually installed the KDE desktop and the Lubuntu Desktop after KDE. When I rebooted the boot screen said lubuntu instead of Xubuntu and the login screen is now the lubuntu login screen instead of the xubuntu one.
Here is my problem, I can't seen to get past the Lubuntu login screen.
Have been running Ubuntu on my desktop since 9.something... now on 11.04, but have not done any updates for a LONG time... I saw Unity and decided I wanted no part of that! I have a laptop that I installed Xubuntu 12.04 on, and like the Xubuntu MUCH better than Ubuntu... So, decided that I would put Xubuntu on the desktop.
I have been using Ubuntu for a few years, but aside from a little bit of playing around it's pretty much the only Linux based OS I have used. To my understanding, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and Lubuntu are just Ubuntu with different desktop environments and default applications. The Lubuntu page on the Ubuntu wiki specifically says that, and that it shares Ubuntu's repositories.
I installed xubuntu-desktop package ad it change the style of my desktop volume notification bubble form the corner to a square in the center of the screen.
I removed xubuntu-desktop package and logged out then in, but no change...
How do I fix this?
As the title says, a very simple question;
What is the difference between a Xubuntu and an Ubuntu with XFCE (Xubuntu-Desktop packages) installed?
Is there only a difference in installed packages and default applications, or are there other differences as well?
And would there be any reason to install Ubuntu with the Xubuntu-Desktop packages rather than Xubuntu itself?
Thanks.
When I try to install Xubuntu on my current Ubuntu installation, it won't let me install "xubuntu-desktop", but it will instead recommend me to install other packages in the Xubuntu repos.
Has the package name changed or do I have to wait for an updated version?
I did this:
cd /usr/share/xsessions
sudo rm LXDE.desktop
sudo rm xubuntu.desktop
sudo rm xfce.desktop
I installed LXDE and xubuntu-desktop using the Ubuntu Software Center. I don't see the option to select either one in the Ubuntu Greeter.
