I tried to compile and install X.org (for a single card/multiseat in this tutorial) by getting source from here and installing it by:
./configure --enable-kdrive --enable-xephyr --enable-xfake --enable-xfbdev --enable-kdrive-kbd --enable-kdrive-mouse --enable-kdrive-evdev --enable-glx-tls
make
sudo make install
after this Ubuntu freezes in boot on the Ubuntu logo and doesn't boot up!

Recently, I was doing something that resulted in ubuntu 12.04
booting, using low graphics mode.
This simple and brief tutorial is going to show you how to enable and setup Compiz Desktop Cube effect in Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal.
First take a look at the screenshot:
To get started:
Go to Ubuntu Software Center, search for and install CompizConfig Settings Manager and compiz-plugins-extra.
Hi all,
I recently installed a 12.04 from an existing installation using the command 'dd'. The first time I booted it, I did see the desktop environment. However, consequently I've only been able to boot to command line.
I ran the boot-repair utility from a live USB and here is the output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1274785/
Typing X gives me a black screen.
After attempting to reinstall my NVIDIA drivers following the 12.10 update today, on reboot I found myself at the command line. Using a Compaq Presario f500. Please understand, I have just barely begun using the terminal, I don't know bash very well, and I am totally lost. How do I start my desktop GUI, and/or is there a way to reinstall Ubuntu from command line without wiping my filesystem?
I have installed CentOS 6 in Virtualbox. Although I have chosen to install General Purpose GNOME Desktop, the GNOME desktop does not start. All I get is a black and white text prompt. I would like to know how I can install GNOME Desktop from the CentOS DVD.
How do I mount the DVD image?
How do I install GNOME desktop from command line?
