How to get total size in bytes of all files inside directory?

http://www.unix.com – Hi! I started my Linux adventure just few weeks ago. Here's my biggest problem yet... :wall: How to get total size in bytes of all files inside directory? So far I've found this solution: du -bs /path_to_my_directory But it's not good. It gives me total size in bytes of all files inside directory and its subdirectories - that's cool - but it also adds the size of the directory itself. So the outcome is 4096 bytes too big (sometimes proportionally more when there's more files). I know it has something to do with file system cluster size or inodes, but I just want to strip the outcome of that (HowTos)

As the subject says; I want to know why is every directory having a size equals to 4K even if they contain files with sizes greater than 4K.

PS: I am aware of 'du -sh' command line utility.

edit: I am assuming directory as a container for files.

If I redistribuite (using subdirectories) the files in a directory that is close to the Max Directory Size, can I workaround the problem? It is not clear if the limitation is the total number files including the ones that are in subdirectories or only due to the number of files and subdirectories that a directory has.

I have just installed a new 2TB disk, but "df -h" shows only 1.8TB - total size, and 1.7TB of free space. I have not used the disk yet.

I plug in my Seagate 320Gb GoFlex USB 3.0 drive in order to store my files and I have a problem - it is not accessible automatically anymore (it was before) and the following command shows the system can not see it:

I've added a new 3TB hdd to my Ubuntu Server 12.04 system for media (already has another drive for the OS), but it's only showing 2.2TB capacity

gives

and

fdisk -l

gives

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and Kubuntu hasn't recognised my CD!
