AMD Catalyst Legacy driver for Linux (compatible with series 2xxx-4xxx cards) has been updated to version 13.1.
This release features some fixes needed by Team Fortress 2 and other Linux games on Steam.
Unfortunately, this driver supports Ubuntu 12.04 LTS only which comes with xorg 1.12.
AMD has released a new Catalyst 12.10 driver for Linux. I was hoping that with with catalyst 12.10, legacy drivers (version 12.6) will be updated to support xorg 1.13 (required for Ubuntu 12.10).
However, this release seems to be a complete joke.

I've seen several answers here which label HD 2xxx-4xxx cards as those which are not supported by new versions of Catalyst drivers and must use legacy versions instead.
Yet, this page seems to indicate that the HD 5650, although it's in a 5xxx series, is also only supported by legacy drivers.
Is there any clarity on this matter?

I need only the reason,not help.I am using open source driver on my amd hd 4570 and I know the alternative in case I want for gaming,which I don't I prefer w7 for that.
Im curious why legacy drivers don't work on ubuntu and work on windows.(since they are designed for legacy cards)
You might have read that catalyst was removing support for any HD4xxx card or below.
