How does “sendmail” send mails to any domain name?

http://serverfault.com – I noticed that one of our servers (running Ubuntu) can send mails to any domain (yahoo.com ,gmail.com) using simple "sendmail" command. But I cannot figure out how to configure similar setup in a new server. I cannot see any files such as "/etc/mail/sendmail.cf" in the first server. How does this work ? Does it use some other SMTP server to do actual mail delivery? Where can I find these settings? (HowTos)

I am busy setting up sendmail server on my linux ubuntu server for the first time. I've setup sendmail and dovecot using some nice you tube guides. Thus far everything seems to be in good order.

Hi guys! I've been reading lots of tutorial about how to configure sendmail with its 2 main files sendmail.cf and sendmail.mc. I have tried to change different macros in sendmail.mc each time restarting sendmail to get it to work but nothing. I am using Fedora 15 and the sendmail program works fine on local host but I want it to work with yahoo smtp.
