Hi everyone, Running ubuntu 10.04 I set up personal file sharing by going to System->Preferences->Personal File Sharing and clicking enable. I then installed Samba, and installed apache and dnssd. I then right clicked on my folder i wanted to share selected Sharing Options and clicked share folder. It worked beautifully and after a reboot could access the folder from my other machine.
I am trying to enable personal file sharing on my Ubuntu 12.04 install but when I access the Personal File Sharing menu it tells me the necessary packages are not installed. What exactly is it looking for and why is this not installed by default?
I installed Oracle VM VirtualBox in my computer pc having Win 7 Ultimate OS and connected to a LAN. I then installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop inside VirtualBox to allow file sharing using Samba. I followed steps/tutorial below from Ubuntu website to configure Samba, however I cannot view this Ubuntu pc when I browse the nework .
What could be possibly went wrong ?

When i share files between two Ubuntu PC via LAN p1 to p2.
If I do System-Preferences-Personal File Sharing it tells me that I can't
enable sharing over the network because "the required packages are not
installed on your system".
It doesn't tell me WHAT packages I need to install!!!!!!
Can anyone enlighten me?
Hi, Thank you everyone in advance for whatever advice you can give me :)
I'm trying to set up a network in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. However, when I try to share a folder I get an error
I've searched and I cant find a way to fix this. I cant share the folder either. at first I tried to use system-config-samba as a GUI tool to set up samba, but I wasnt able to connect.
So I have ubuntu 11.10 desktop 64bit installed.
Once I boot in i browse to a folder (on a mdadm array) i want to share on the network (to other windows and linux machines)
i right click the folder and go to file sharing and select Share this folder, and alow others etc and allow guest
and it works perfect, until I reboot and it loses all the settings.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
Ok,
I just installed Ubuntu server 12.04 on my pentium 4 computer, the install went great and I only choose to install samba from the list of software. When I try the samba -v command it says that samba is not installed, but if I try to edit the conf file using vi /etc/samba/smb.conf it works and the file comes up.
