I have an application which is forced upon start to Desktop 2 and acitivity B. If I am currently in desktop 1 of activity A and start this program, it opens in the rigth place, but my active desktop is changed to desktop 2 of activit A.
Is there some way to disable this?

xdg-mime may have been configured to use these applications.Here is how I configured Thunar as my file manager> xdg-mime query filetype [directory]

I was wondering if anyone had any solid resources for me to get started with Linux desktop development. I'm an experienced PHP programmer and have had little to do with desktop applications for any platform.
I've tried starting a full screen application without a window manager, using xinit,
which works but instead of starting at the top left of the screen the application starts somewhere in the middle of my screen.
I've tried the same using a custom entry in /usr/share/xsessions
and starting that from lightdm instead
of the default ubuntu window manager, but that gives me the same result.
