How do I solve unmet dependencies?

I had 2 versions of python (i.e) python 2.7 installed by the OS and python 3.2 which i installed from the python site.

I can't install GIMP it says something about unmet dependencies.

I cannot get synaptic to do ANYTHING at all because of broken dependencies:

I'm unable to install CVS due to unmet dependencies. The dependencies are for libraries that are older than what's currently on the system.

I am working on Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE as my current project.

I am finding it difficult to install any new packages on this OS.

When I try to install python-nautilus using the Ubuntu Software Center I get an error message titled "Package dependencies cannot be resolved".

How do I resolve unmet package dependencies?

occasionally, when I'm installing stuff, I get an error like the following:

Some packages could not be installed.

My apt-get is currently complaining about unmet dependencies (and refuses to do anything until I fix them):
