http://askubuntu.com – I have a USB drive with Ubuntu created from pendrivelinux.com. I've been running it off the USB drive to play with Linux on various machines without a problem. I recently installed Ubuntu to a hard drive from the USB drive using the USB boot loader's menu option (versus the "install to hard drive" option found on the live-USB desktop). Most everything installed correctly. However the installer overwrote the boot loader on the USB drive and never installed it on the fixed disk such that I couldn't boot the machine without the USB drive. I found this thread that helped me to correct the fix (HowTos)

I installed Ubuntu today for the first time on a Dell desktop running Windows XP sp3. I opted to install on a second hard drive, following these instructions: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/07/23/dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-...

When I reboot my computer, and enter the boot sequence menu in BIOS, there isn't even an entry for my second hard drive.

I have a 320gb USB hard drive, one partition for my files, one for playing Wii games, and one which I would like to use for an Ubuntu instillation.

To do this, I partitioned my disk accordingly using Windows, then booted from the Ubuntu CD to install the OS to my external hard drive partition.

I have An Acer Aspire 1362 Laptop with AMD Sompron 2800+ processor and only 256MB RAM, with Windows XP installed. I have downloaded Lubuntu-12.04-alternate-i386.iso and installed it to a 16GB USB stick. I do not want to install Lubuntu on my hard drive (yet!).

I have got the USB stick to boot, and am working my way through the menu.

I have really screwed up. I was working in fixing a second drive windows install so I could dual boot and somehow either deleted or made my linux boot non-functional. I am running on a 9,04 live CD (all I have) but actually have 12.04 installed on the hard drive. I have tried google searching this subject and have tried a few things, but they have all failed. I am at a loss of what to do.

Hello all..:D I have a good Redhat 9 install on my hard drive. But I need to use this install on another computer. So I formatted an USB flash drive as ext3, installed grub in it and copied my existing / filesystem on the hard drive to the USB flash drive.

For testing the install, I disabled my hard drive, floppy drive and CDROM drive in the BIOS setup.

I'd like to fully install Ubuntu 12.10 onto a 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive, not create a live USB but to treat the flash drive as an external hard drive. I've read it's possible and I know my computer can boot from it. However, it doesn't work when I try. I've booted a Live USB from another flash drive and installed Ubuntu onto the 16GB one.

How can I use a USB flash drive to boot Linux from a partition on (another) hard drive?

I'm trying to install Linux on an encrypted partition on the hard drive (using LVM on LUKS).

Since /boot must be on a separate, unencrypted partition, I would like to store it on a USB flash drive.

My plan was to install GRUB (2) to the flash drive (/dev/sdb) and boot Linux from it's MBR, or if the drive was
