Out of a sudden after I logging in to the 'Ubuntu' session Unity or maybe Compiz doesn't start anymore (actually I'm not sure wether it is Compiz or Unity).
This simple tutorial will explain how to restart unity and unity-2d in Ubuntu. Normally we need to restart unity only when meet a “no response” problem.
o.k, this is embarrassing:
I have installed Compiz Config Settings Manager and tried to fix it so that the transition time between changing tabs (using alt+tab) will be short. by accident I un-pressed V from something else, and it asked me about a conflict - I pressed the "x" button to close the window and as a result I stopped seeing the unity interface.
i'm a newbie to linux os, i have recently installed the latest version of ubuntu 12.10 desktop 32bit on a hp-compaq d530 desktop pc, but after a restart login screen works fine, once logged in after 20/30secs i get a window prompt with the message " the application compiz has closed unexpectedly " i have send the report and after that i am stuck with just the wallpaper / screensaver.
I recently learned about Compiz and I had read that Unity was comparable to windows aero... so that left me wondering, if Compiz isn't a desktop enviroment, what is it? And is it possible for Compiz and Unity to coexist?
I fear this to be an elementary question, but Ill take the hit just to get some help!
Short story : using Ubuntu 12.4, launcher, compiz - all good. Control left mouse stopped working, after much research I removed compiz, ran up 2D session, all good.
But now logging back on to a Unity 3D session, my launcher bar (on the left) has gone. So has the Unity plugin in Compiz.
I've looked through some posts about compiz and either haven't found the answer, or haven't understood what's been said. Could someone help me out?
I installed ubuntu 12.04 through windows 7 (so I can dual boot) and installed compiz and set up the settings I want (hotcorners etc).

I recently upgraded my computer to a brand new motherboard and SSD and installed a fresh version of Oneiric Ocelot (Ubuntu 11.10) alongside of my other operating systems.
The most serious problem I've experienced is when using the Compiz configuration settings manager. Every time I enable or disable a plugin, the Unity desktop crashes. It's specifically a conflict with the Unity plugin.
