how do i install nvidia?

http://crunchbang.org – new in linux. how to install nvidia driver? my old pc, p4 2.6ghz, 512mb, hdd 80gb, geforce 5700. i saw some post said that some user after install nvidia driver or upgrade the system will not be able login to linux, true? (HowTos)

Okokokok, need help before I throw my rig out the freakin' window...

Hi! I did an upgrade of Nvidia(Latest version v.196) and KDE-base4 to KDE 4.4.4(I think) in Yast2.

Now when i reboot the X doesnt start. I claim it can't find any nvidia-module. I thing the upgrade of Nvidia v.196 failed, so i need to know how to reinstall Nvidia in console(CLI). It only boot up in cli.

My laptop is the Acer Timeline Ultra M5-481TG. It has an Nvidia Geforce GT 640M LE gpu. I am running Ubuntu Studio 12.10.

I have tried to install this driver many ways because Nouveau eats my battery and I believe is somewhat out of date. I have even tried using sudo stop lightdm in another console.
