http://askubuntu.com – I am shopping for a new laptop. Most new laptops come with a hybrid graphics setup and often with NVidia (Optimus). I am eyeing a Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z7C-S02DE. It has an integrated Intel graphics card and a discrete Nvidia with Optimus technology. It does not have a BIOS setting for the hybrid graphics (at least i could not find it, but the BIOS is quite minimal anyway). I saw some reviews that say that the Ubuntu support should be quite good with some minor and fixable issues. What I didn't see is whether attaching an external display works. I have three issues with my lenovo t420s, they might be related but I'm just not smart enough to fix them.1:By default the bios is set to using optimus, and if I leave it at that x starts up all right but I don't think it is using the discrete graphics card at all? If I change the bios to use discrete graphics X fails with message "no screen found".

Decided to start a thread to list some of the laptops that have nvidia optimus in them and get it to run with Ubuntu (or other variants) with Bumblebee or Ironhide or other solutions that exist out there.

Basically I'm curious about the Ubuntu laptop users' answers to the following questions:

1) What kind of laptops do you use and with what NVIDIA video card?

first at all check lspci | grep -i vgaI have optimus and I see both cards, Intel and nVidia.What do you see?If you install xf86-video-intel instead of nvidia driver, does it work then?

My laptop uses a hybrid graphics hardware.

Using the vgaswitcheroo I am able to power off either card and switch between them correctly.

The issue is that the system wakes up/resumes from suspend correctly only when using the discrete graphics, or atleast the discrete graphics must be powered on even if the display is connected to the onboard intel card.

Has anyone faced this issues?
