I am new to ubuntu and installed MySQL use a rpm file,

I tried to change the database dirrectory, datadir, I did the following steps.
My machine: Laptop Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit
Install: sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client
All Ok, I can create databases, tables, all ok.
Change the datadir:
1) $ /etc/init.d/mysql stop
2) $ cp -R -p /var/lib/mysql /new_path
3) $ rm /new_path (this only remove files unnecessary)
4) $ gedit /e
How can i stop mysql server (installed using binary installation under /usr/local/mysql)?
When i go in /usr/local/mysql/bin and execute command
mysqld stop i get following error message :
[ERROR] Fatal error: Please read "Security" section of the manual to find out how to run mysqld as root!
[ERROR] Aborting
[Note] mysqld: Shutdown complete
and i can still see process for mysql server.

I have two instances of mysql running on a server. I need two different init.d scripts. The two instances have different configuration files /etc/my.cnf and /etc/my-slave.cnf. I copied the /etc/init.d/mysql files to /etc/init.d/mysql-slave and changed the conf parameter to /etc/my-slave.cnf but the mysql-slave service is still controlling the first instance of mysql.
I have installed MySQL server 5.5 on Ubuntu 12.04.
I am trying to start MySQL server on a different sock file.
I have a standard MySQL Server running on Red hat 5.7. I have edited /etc/my.cnf to specify the bind address as my server's public IP address.
I have mysql installed (from repos) on a development machine (laptop) and I don't need the daemon running on every boot. I've copied /etc/init/mysql.conf to /etc/init/mysql.conf.old and then removed everything following the "start on" line.
After a fresh installation of F12, I can't get mysql to run. The problem appears to be caused by no user or group 'mysql'. The error log says:
091203 20:33:27 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
091203 20:33:27 [ERROR] Fatal error: Can't change to run as user 'mysql' ; Please check that the user exists!
