Ok so i'm completely new to linux in every way possible. I thought i would give linux a try since there was no reason not to. Usually i can pick up on things and resolve them on my own but this isnt my usual. So i have installed mint 8 on my macbook pro. But i cant seen to get audio working or the backlight on the keyboard. Also my usb wifi adapter based on the rt3070 chip.
I have an nvidia 5500 fx and karmic 9.10 and cannot get it to work.
Code:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] (rev a1)
I have tried the hardware drivers gui with ubuntu, same result (see below)
I have tried manual install of 185 driver, same result
I have tried the installer and driver from nvidia.com, same result
I'm using Ubuntu 12.10.
I've got a quite old NVIDIA graphic card and I with installed restricted drivers from Settings panel (as also shown in this thread).
➜ ~ lspci
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] (rev a1)
I tried a lot of them: version 173-update, current, beta, but the only one that can run unity-2d it's current-update. That's Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64bit.
However...
my laptop has nvidia GT540m
yesterday i install nvidia-current after updating fromsudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates then i write sudo nvidia-xconfig and then reboot my desktop visual effect changes and it look good like nvidia is working but still glx i not working and nvidia-setting tells me that You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver my dkms status is nvidia-current,
I have two GPUs, one is AMD (fglrx-updates) and one nVidia (nvidia-current), drivers from x-swat PPA. The AMD card is used byt xorg (without problems).
have installed Ubuntu plenty of times on this machine and never had problems getting Jockey to install the video drivers. However with 9.10 it appears to hang when trying to install the nVidia driver (any version).
My graphics card is a nVidia GeForce 8800
