How to deactivate laptop internal WLAN card, activate external one?

I have a new Dell laptop that I installed OpenSUSE on, but can't get the Dell WLAN card (Broadcom) to activate. I can see it in the hardware listing, and I can attempt to set it up using iwconfig, but when I do an ifconfig it does not show, and when I do a ifconfig wlan0 it tells me the interface is not installed.

I have a large external drive, which I connect to my laptop via a PCMCIA card - the machine is old and does not have USB 2.0 built in, so I use the PCMCIA card for that.

I am thinking of the following setup, and hope you can give me some tips on whether or not that would be a sound solution:

I just installed 11.2 on a Compaq Evo N1000v.

This particular machine was used and had no wireless card in it.

I bought a Linksys usb connector. Opensuse shows it in the network app but it shows no activity at all and does not 'see' the wireless network in the location

I am in the process of installing Ubuntu 10.04 on another laptop, one that originally had Win. 95 on it. I had read that the Cisci 350 series lan card was not recognized by Ubuntu. This is the same card I used on the same laptop I am installing Ubuntu 10.4 on. Anything I should know?
Or maybe I should just wait and see if it is recognized/works.

What's the best way to do a dual boot with one OS on an external hard drive? I have tried a few times but failed each time.

I've recently installed 11.2 and find that today docking the laptop for the first time doesn't automatically enable the external monitor. I was expecting the external monitor to be enabled and the laptop screen to be disabled as the lid is closed anyway, i.e. the video to be switched to the external monitor when docked.

I'm using a Panasonic Let's Note (= Touchbook) laptop, model CF-Y2, running openSUSE 11.2 / KDE 4.4.

A few days ago, I started experiencing problems with my network connection, and I'd like to find out whether this has to do with the internal wlan possibly being defect.

Hi folks
On F11 a USB sound card got recognized immediately and began to be used.
On F12 the same sound card is listed but still all the 'dings' and 'dangs' of the OS as also all browser ( youtube ) sounds are heard from the PC speakers.

i hope this is in the correct sub-forum, and shouldnt be in the laptop sub forum. anyway, the problem....

im on an intel HD audio sound chipset, and the internal speakers work 100% perfect.
