Open source software is just plain great, and in the realm of audio editing, you’ll find no open source program more lauded than the popular Audacity. Truth be told, Audacity is useful for more things than simple audio editing. But the fact remains that Audacity isn’t loved by everyone.

Audacity is free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds. Good news is Audacity 2.0 has been released with numerous improvements in GUI and features. It has dozens of new features, developed in the 1.3 series.

I love using Skype, especially for working with training coaches. I also use Audacity for recording audio. I am using Ubuntu Studio which actually runs in xfce instead of Gnome. I have a Behringer X1222 USB Audio Mixer for inputs. Here's the issue: Skype runs great when it runs by itself. I get all the sound settings correct and get both receive and send audio.

Ogg Vorbis and Ogg FLAC (the Ogg stream version of the Free Lossless Audio Codec) are popular free-licensed and patent-free codecs for handling sound. These are the formats I’ll be using in a complex Ogg Theora video file that I am creating as part of my “Lib-Ray” experiment in creating an alternative format for distributing high definition video.

The audacity audio editor has reached version 2.0.2. Audacity in Ubuntu Software Center is a little old, and you may not get the latest version from official update.
