It is generally said that one need not create backup of installed programs since it is easy to reinstall these after restoring os. However, for safety I want to create backup for all the programs I installed in ubuntu 10.04LTS. These include programs like xfig, latex, gcc, gimp etc and all these were done using command "sudo apt-get install <program_name>".

How to list all installed packages?
I would like to list all installed programs to a text file, in case my old ticker doesn't hold up much longer.
Is there anyway this can be done?
I saw this link here but not sure if its want I need or not.
As you've probably noticed - I am a Ubuntu noob (I just got it yesterday.)
I have installed some programs through Terminal before, about 5-10 - so using Terminal doesn't scare me. But, I'm getting a new computer soon (yes, yes, I know I should've waited and did this on the new computer instead, but I was so excited!
Hello,
I know that you guys must get asked LOTS of questions on making spins...sorry. I was just wondering if their is a way to make a spin with ALL the same programs install. Now I know that you can add programs to be installed in the kickstart file. But what about programs that aren't in the repos? For example I would like nividia-cuda 5 and svn code::blocks to be part of my spin.
In debian based systems once my system was set I'd do something like this to create a list of applications and be able to wipe-install base then reinstall my favorite apps and servers with one command.
Hi Folks,
My name is Bruce.
I'm a microsoft user and tired of it. Thinking of switching to Ubuntu for operating system.
I run all windows based programs currently and was wondering if windows based programs can be installed on ubuntu.
Cause all the programs i normally use as i remember didn't have a linux based options?
So how limited would i be?
Thanks,
Bruce
I have two computers, but the old one is not working well. So I'd like to install the old hard disk on the new computer.
I know how to do this and I know how to access the data from sdb. But I have some old programs installed on sdb which I'm not able to install them again on sda.
In case the back-up file size is so much that it can not be saved in one DVD, can one use more than one DVD? I mean back-up of operating system along with installed programs. I know many people prefer not to back up installed programs, but suppose, someone try this. Will this method work at the time of restoration?
I've only installed two programs from AUR that would have icons, but neither of them use the icons that come with them. I've checked and the icons are installed in /usr/share/icons and the Icon tag is specified in /usr/share/applications/<program-name>.desktop. I'm using GNOME 3, and all I get is the default executable icon with these programs I have installed from the AUR.
