Is there a console application equivalent to Total Commander's fast file viewer (F3)?
Total Commander's (Windows app) F3 viewer can instantly "open" files of any size. The file contents is only read from the disk if you need it: that is, if you scroll or search inside the file.
Is there an alternative app for Linux/Ubuntu that will do the same, but from the console?
Having used Total Commander in windows (I still have a dual boot configuration) it was natural to use Gnome Commander in Ubuntu.
Having moved quite large amount of data (~1TB) over the network from one storage to another, I noticed the file on target system differs from the original.
Setup:
PC (Windows 7 64) with Windows Sharing -> 1000BaseT network 2x 1G switch -> PC (Windows XP) as Windows Sharing client
or
NAS with Windows Sharing (probably Samba?) -> 1000BaseT network 1x 1G switch -> PC (Windows 7 64) as Windows Sharin

When I connect to a VPS via a Shell link in MC, the location of the command prompt remains at my local box. I would like to be able to execute commands (e.g. mkdir, tar/untar) directly from the location of the left or right panel. I could ssh into the VPS with the reguar command line options separately, but this is not as handy as how I can use SFTP in Total Commander under Windows: e.g.
