http://askubuntu.com – Possible Duplicate: What different DE's and shells are available? I have ubuntu 11.10 installed with unity. It seems to be running a bit slow than i would have liked. So I want to switch to some other desktop environment. Please suggest some light weight Desktop environment and instructions to install it. (HowTos)

Hi I was thinking about try a lightweight desktop for my Ubuntu.

I like Unity but am just curious to see how well they work.

I have a slower computer that I would like to use the Lubuntu desktop environment with. However, I do not want to install any of the software that is not related to the desktop environment. I am talking about programs like Abiword and Lubuntu Software Center.

I am looking for a Light weight window manager/desktop environment similar to unity in these ways. window buttons layout like unity. side bar/dock on left with system tray, apps, devices & a menu of some sort.

the reason I am looking for this is my computer can't handle unity & my development apps at once any more.

Ubuntu 12.10 comes with Unity Desktop environment/shell (based on GNOME 3). A lot of users love unity, they like the cools features of unity (Unity dash, lens, launcher etc) , but there are lots of haters too.

I'm using Ubuntu and I would like to experience KDE desktop environment. I have installed KDE in full mode using apt-get install with no error but no further effects occurred. I don't know how to use my installation, start in kde mode and switch between unity and kde. help please.

If you’re not happy with the default desktop environment (Unity shell on GNOME3) in Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), then you can try installing some alternative desktop such as MATE, Cinnamon, KDE etc or a lightweight desktop environment such as XFCE. Why go for a Lightweight Desktop Environment ?

Unity is the default desktop environment in Ubuntu 12.10. Although, it has improved a lot but if you’re still looking for an alternative desktop with classic GNOME 2 style layout then you may try MATE. MATE is also a GNOME 3 based desktop (just like unity), it’s easy to use, and the it’s stable too.

I have a System76 Lemur Ultra Thin (lemu4) with Ubuntu 12.04.1 64 bit Long Term Service and I want to set Cinnamon to be the default desktop environment after I login to the Ubuntu Greeter (lightdm). Currently, it is set to the default Unity desktop environment. How do I change it and make everything work properly? Please help me if you can. Thank you.
