I am trying to get a USB external hard drive (ext4) to automatically mount when it is plugged in. I used to have it working but has since stopped.
Using Lucid Lynx, after the latest update usb drive stops to mount when inserted... Tried several different drives, all didn't work. manually mount using "udisks --mount /dev/sdb1" works just fine.
Any idea what might be wrong?
Thanks!
Some systems use udev / pmount to automatically mount thumbdrives. How is that solved in Ubuntu (specifically, Ubuntu 12.04)? Apparently, neither the pmount package nor the corresponding udev rules are present, yet Ubuntu mounts the inserted USB drives automatically. How does that happen?
Ubuntu desktop edition by default auto-mount removable media connected via usb port. This tutorial shows how to disable usb auto-mount feature on Ubuntu 11.10, 12.04 and higher.
1. Install dconf-editor by searching dconf-tools in Software Center.
2. Launch dconf-editor and navigate to org -> gnome -> desktop -> media-handling
3. The automount key controls whether to automatically mount media.
I noticed that my firewire drives don't automount in gnome. In fact, I can't seem to mount them without having to authenticate like I can with USB drives.
Is there something special about firewire drives from USB drives?
I would like to make use of Btrfs' transparent compression on an external drive.
Which tool is best for formatting the drive? Disk Utility or GParted?
How do I activate the compression? During formatting or when I mount the drive? I guess at mount time. I'm using usbmount to automatically mount newly attached devices, because nobody is logged in on the desktop.
In my nautilus, I have this annoying drive labeled "Ubuntu 12.10 i386" and when you click on it, it gives the 'cannot mount' error. With a little GParted research, I found out that its the Extended partition containing the SWAP partition. Since it's obviously not of any use to nautilus, how do I make it stop showing up as an unmounted drive, or at least hide it?
I have a dual boot machine (Windows and recently installed Ubuntu 12.04) with several logical drives (formatted as ntfs) that I want to access in Ubuntu. When I use Nautilus, these all show up as Devices at the top of the left hand panel.
I am unable to mount a USB drive (or SD card) to my system without root access.
