I have Linux Mint 14 installed as my only OS. I have one extended partition containing /swap, / and /home, and I have some unallocated space on my drive.
I'm guessing that Mint decided to put this all on an extended partition instead of three primary partitions.
So I want to build Linux From Scratch using some of my unallocated space.
I want to install another Linux distribution (Fedora) besides Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. As I like to hibernate my system and as I want to use this feature on both installed Linux distributions, how many swap partitions do I need? And if I need multiple swap partitions, how do I configure them?
Edit/Clarification: I want to be able to hibernate both operating systems simultaneously.
Hello. I've already read Ubuntu's SwapFAQ here but it doesn't say anything about deleting swap partitions, so just to be clear, and to avoid any possible headaches, I have to ask: Is it safe to delete all but one of these swap partitions and extend my main ext4 partition?
Screenshot illustrating the issue:
The NTFS partition is just a shared media partition NOT a windows system partition.
I've installed Fedora 18 Spherical Cow with the new installer and I created 3 partitions from free space on the hard drive (/, /boot and swap).
After I completed the installation, I figured out that there is 8G still free and I want to use it for a /home partition.
Is that possible now?
Could somebody please advise the best method for preping a hard drive for Ubuntu and Windows 7?
I've got the Window's 7 partition covered and I will have another partition just for data. My problem is I'm not too sure what to do with the Ubuntu install.
I would very much appreciate advice on sizes of the various partitions and their file structure.
Hi,
I have a code that uses a lot of memory (over 50 GB) and my RAM (16 GB) and current swap space (32 GB) are not enough. Is there way to increase the swap partition size without having to reformat the drive? I also heard you can use swap files (I have no idea how to do that), and can you have huge swap file >20 GB ?
Thanks in advance
To preface this, I would say that I am a Ubuntu newb, and have only been using this for fun for a while, never seroiusly got into the workings of the system.
I installed ubuntu 12.04.1 32 from a live cd to my 64 GB USB Drive that I was not using. When I installed, I wasn't sure what to do about SWAP so i decided to install it without any.
Ihave ubuntu 11.10 on 1 TB hard drive /home is seperate 890 GB partition swap is 8GB and boot is 9 GB now afrter shrinking /home and moving swap I have unallocated 23 GB between / boot and swap. I need to expand boot to the unallocated space as am getting low disk space warning in boot partition as there is only 796 MB unused in that partition.
I accidentally deleted my swap partition via gparted.
(I'm still logged in the system so restoring should be easier) Can someone help me please?
