Help in Understanding startup process.

http://crunchbanglinux.org – I want to understand startup process. I am not linux expert. As far as I know linux run at different run level and default run level of crunchbang is 2. The scripts in rc0.d,rc1.d,rc.2 have softlink to scipts in init.d and they are executed at different run levels. To my understanding these scripts are executed only at startup (not during shutdwn. Sounds silly question but still want to ask to be 100% sure).So if I do not want ntpd dameon to be executed at startup, I will have to remove soft link from  rc2.d.Please let me know what I understand is correct? Because I do not want ntpd to ch (HowTos)
