I installed a few new things on my laptop (salome and a fortran compiler so that I could set it up) and since then I cannot boot ubuntu normally.
When I turn on my laptop I am given the option of loading ubuntu, ubuntu from recovery, previous linux versions etc. ubuntu will show me the loading screen but then turn to black, which is also what happens when I try previous linux versions.
I recently was mucking around with my graphics drivers on Ubuntu 12.10 (I have a Radeon HD 6950 and I was getting borderless windows and no lenses). After I rebooted, now Ubuntu will show the logo and the orange dots for a minute, then the screen will go black and everything will freeze.
System : Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome. 64 bit.
Today, when I was adjusting the display driver, the system started behaving abnormally, first the menu was missing (both in Gnome & Unity) and sometimes the display was coming with a purple tinge. I was trying to remove the Nvidia driver, then there was a power failure and I was completely messed up.
I had Ubuntu 3.0.23 and installed manually the nVidia drivers 2 months ago. Now took the accumulated updates 3.0.26 and can't boot anymore. After the GRUB menu I get a black screen and a cursor. Is there a way to get into the system and remove the nVidia driver?. I have tried booting with both kernels and also the recovery mode but doesn't work.
Hello everyone
I've recently bought a new laptop. It's an EliteBook 8440p. It has a nVidia NVS 3100 graphics card. I'm running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 9.10.
Today I accepted some automatic updates on Ubuntu 12.04, and after closing my laptop, the screen was black and Ubuntu was unresponsive. Since then when I reboot I get the Ubuntu splash screen and then it goes back to the black screen and I can't do anything. I've tried rebooting it in recovery mode and this doesn't help. What steps can I take to diagnose and hopefully fix this problem?
I had JB, rooted, unlocked and stock recovery working just fine. I forget the update file in sd card and accidentally go into recovery mode. Screen went black. Backlight of the screen is going on and off every 30 sec.
Forced to reboot, boot logo comes up, after a few seconds screen goes black, and backlight of the screen goes off and on and off again in a continuous loop.
Hi. My problem is I can boot into recovery mode and normal boot to bring up gui and do everything. the main concern is i can not log into the normal mode because after my desktop shows for about 5 seconds the menu bar and all, the screen goes black. ctrl alt f2 etc does not work to bring up a console just a straight black screen. the recovery mode lets the screen stay on constantly.
I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my old laptop (Asus X50N).
I downloaded new nVidia drivers (my video-card is nVidia 7000M) and installed it as described here. After reboot I see for 1 second login command line and then black screen with blinking cursor (I can't type anything).
In safe mode I removed nvidia-current package but I still see black screen.
What I should do? Thank you.
