This probably needs to go in a "General" forum, but I don't see one called that.
I was at a bus stop taking my tower to the Freegeek lab. I met a young kid there, who was introduced to computers a few years ago. Because of what psychologists call the Language Acquisition Device, I've come to respect the skills of young kids with a few years of computer familiarity.
for some reason, my opensuse 11.2 can not shut down as normal.
by pressing ctrl-alt-F1 and issuing "init 0", the console displays the following messages and then stops there.
Segmentation fault
Master Resource control: runlevel 0 has been reached

Hello, I have Ubuntu on a flash drive. The one problem I have is when I log off of the default account (Ubuntu) and onto my personal it wont shut down or restart when I tell it to. I have read that I can issue "sudo shutdown -P now" and it will shut it down. However I would like to be able to click something on my desktop or something of that nature to shut the machine off.
Hi,
Lubuntu 12.04
From one moment to the next, on a previously perfect system, the following:
- I try to make a scan with simple scan. I am told no printer is connected, which is a lie.
- I also cannot update. The window just says "Waiting" endlessly, while nothing happens.
So, im using an updated version of F18 and lately when i go to shutdown my machine, instead of saying "Restart" it says "Install updates and restart". Now for the last few times ive shut it down or restarted it boots back up and comes up with a box that says "an offline update was requested but no packages required updating". Can anyone help me out?
Title says all. When I choose shut down or hibernate if my computer has been on a while, it just goes to the log-in screen. If I choose the shut down option there, it does nothing. It only happens if I leave it on for a while. I do not have auto login enabled. I am running 11.10 ( with all the latest updates). I can shut down using the terminal. I am a Linux newbie, so please help. Thanks!
Hey gang. Simple but head-scratching problem. Sometimes, and only sometimes, my system refuses to shut down or reboot. Using either the Exit menu, or the requisite commands for shut down or reboot in Terminal, the system just sits and waits. I can use the system as normal while the ghosted box for Shutdown "Please Wait.." is on screen, indefinitely.
System - Acer Aspire-5332.
When I come to shut down my computer, many times it freezes on the "Ubuntu" screen instead of shutting down completely. Pressing any key will shut it down at this point, but it should be doing this automatically. It's irritating.
Does anyone know why this happens/ how to fix it?
