I am working on setting up an HTPC running Ubuntu 12.10. I have been searching for hours for a solution to get 5.1 surround sound working through HDMI, to no avail. I do not know a lot about audio standards or how they are managed in Linux.

I have s3 and allshare cast dongle. It works well. However, my second TV doesn't have HDMI,it has DVI.

I've been using my Zenbook's HDMI port for watching movies on my TV a bit. Everything worked fine, until I wanted to turn off my screen whenever the HDMI cable was plugged in.
I did this in the settings under Screens menu.

I have been having trouble with my 9500 GT card. I have it set up in a Ubuntu 12.04 media centre, with a TV connected via HDMI. The set-up is working as a media server to other systems in the house, and as such is on 24/7.
