I'm trying to get HDMI audio output from a ION system but I'm running out of ideas.
After the install process (12.10 server, xorg, alsa, nvidia-current) I immediately un-muted channels in alsamixer and run
xbmc@htpc:~$ aplay -l

Ok, so I think I have done my home work. I bought this card for price, because it is silent, and to add HDMI.
I have not had any video issues, just audio.
I disabled the onboard audio. So my only audio device is the hdmi.
I looked in /proc/asound/card0 to see eld#1.0 is the valid EDID.
So I added
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0 probe_mask=0x102
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.
I kind of solved it. I just changed so that ALSA uses hardware instead of pulse and it works now.But aplay and alsaplayer still don't work. I get this error in aplay:aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
aplay: main:696: audio open error: Device or resource busy

Hi,
I've just set up Ubuntu running on what I hope to be a media computer. Video over HDMI works fine but audio does not. I'm using the onboard HDMI port on a Asus F1A75-M motherboard.
Hi all,
I'm trying to build an Ubuntu XBMC machine and I'm having problems with HDMI audio. I've installed a spanking new version of 12.04 and done a full update. I've also installed the current recommended NVidia drivers which seem to work fine. However I don't get audio over HDMI. In fact I get a constant static style hiss from the speakers.
hmmm. so I plugged in a TV with an HDMI cable and got video! awesome! but oh no, there's no sound!
This is from a laptop with an ATI Radeon card built in. Analog audio works and plays out from the laptop's speakers. But selecting the HDMI card doesn't play audio out the TV speakers. I know the hardware is good, because it works in Ubuntu, and so linux can do it.
Hello,
I've bought a tv a few days ago, tried to connect my laptop via hdmi cable to it - worked perfectly, I just had to choose right audio device output as hdmi and it worked with no issues.
So I've tried to connect my desktop computer to the tv using hdmi cable - video works with no issues, but there's no sound.
I have an GT520 graphics card and I am trying to get the sound working with my XBMC setup and I'm having trouble.
Things I have completed:
aplay -l
List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
then

and
alsamixer
which is set to unmu
I'd like to use my Geforce 9800GT's HDMI audio as a separate sound device. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10.
