I have software RAID on Ubuntu 10.10 with currently disabled hardware RAID controller, server has 2*500GB in RAID 1 drives for OS and 3TB*4 in RAID 1 for storage. What do i want, create hardware raid at least for storage w/o loosing data, or best option to add two new 3TB drives and create hardware RAID 10.
Can I have software RAID for OS and hardware raid for storage ?
Can anyone guide me to get Ubuntu server 14.04LTS installed on my servers hardware RAID.
I have got the raid set up as raid1 using 2 1Tb disks, but when I go to install the OS I get the choice to either install it on one or the other drive. I can see in manual I can set up software raid but that's not correct I'm guessing as I have a hardware raid controller.
I have a software RAID for two eSATA 2TB drives. They work fine without complaints but if you are on the server trying to do anything very early in the morning like 4 AM, the server slows down to a crawl to the point where it's hard to even ssh into the system and execute an uptime command.
So yesterday, I had Ubuntu 12.04 on a 1tb standalone drive, and a hardware RAID 1 array of two 1.5tb drives. The RAID is setup in the BIOS, and has functioned as expected on Windows and on Ubuntu 13.04.
Today, I installed Xubuntu 13.10 on the standalone drive. So NO changes made to the RAID 1 array.
Well, I've been looking into setting up a RAID for my home server. I've been trying to decide between a software raid or buying a relatively cheap SATA controller and using it for a hardware RAID. I'm trying to figure out the pros and cons of buying a cheap hardware card for use rather than simply using a software solution. Are there any negatives to using LVM with either
