grub boot order problems after update

http://askubuntu.com – My grub menu went through rather extensive changes after the last update. It started booting to my old 12.04 entry by default. Where this gets confusing is that there is no longer a 12.10 entry in grub.cfg. I installed and tried the grub-cfg as mentioned in How do I change the grub boot order? and everything appeared to go ok but when I rebooted to test, the boot menu looked the same and the behaviour was the same. I restarted grub configure and the changes it indicated that my changes had happened. I looked at /etc/default/grub expecting that it would have changed after save from the gru (HowTos)
