http://askubuntu.com – I have gone through many pains to boot through my windows 7 partition. I had windows 7, then one fine day I installed Ubuntu and again formatted the partition where Ubuntu was installed only to find the my Windows does not boot(Probably corrupted MBR). I again installed Ubuntu later but the Grub could not detect windows. So i manually added windows by editing the file 40_custom. But when I select the win7 entry in the grub, it displays the error : no such disk. What do I do?? Additional Info : Ubuntu version : 11.10 x64|| Win 7 Home premium, 64 bit|| While in the process of debugging I o (HowTos)

Original title: How can i solve (un)booting windows 7 on the same partition with grub?

I've been researching for 2/3 days about this problem and I have came up empty.

Basically, partition 1 is Windows 7 and partition 2 is Ubuntu 12.04. I told Ubuntu to install into partition 2 and to install grub on partition 1 and that works fine. But the problem now is that I can't boot to Windows 7.

Hello, I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I can't get back into windows (no such device / file not found when trying to load windows boot loader from grub)

I installed grub2 by using Synaptic and I can see a new menu.lst and it picked all the kernels installed on my Ubuntu 12.10 m/c. Great! It however did not have an entry for Windows 7 which is on (hd0,0). So, I manually added the Win 7 entry into the menu.lst as shown below.

Yesterday I installed ubuntu 12.04.1.

Note : its a dual boot system along windows 7

At first grub was appearing and i was able to start ubuntu but then i had to switch to windows but windows was not booting when i select windows 7 it jumps back to grub window. So i fix the Windows Boot Loader using repair from windows media and wolla windows started to boot but Ubuntu Grub gone.

Given a dual partition of Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 - both 64 bit operating systems and a working version of GRUB: I need to be reminded of what will happen upon reinstallation of Windows 7 on the Windows partition in terms of GRUB.

Will GRUB be wiped?

I am concerned about this.

Hi everyone,

I'm having some problems with setting up a dual boot. The setup I have is as followed:

Windows 7 installed on one disk drive (sda) Ubuntu 12.4 installed on my second disk drive (sdb)

If I boot off the second disk drive I get the grub menu which has the option to boot either ubuntu or windows.

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a single disc which already had Windows 7 x64 on it. Windows was on two primary partitions, a very large partition C: and a small 100 mb partition. I've been using this computer for the past year with no problems.

During the installation of Ubuntu, I made four partitions: 1) /boot, 2)/(root), 3)/home and 4) SWAP.

I have a second machine where Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Debian Squeeze are installed on the same HD and when I boot, I have this grub menu where I can choose which partition I will used. It works perfectly!
