The Australian Greens are dismayed that the Cybercrime Bill has been passed by the House of Representatives with support from both Government and Opposition members, despite the Cyber Safety Committee tabling a highly critical unanimous report on the bill, proposing a series of amendments and requesting clarification.

In an opinion piece today in the Sydney Morning Herald, Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, has defended the Cybercrime Bill against accusations that it will jeopardise people’s privacy and that private information will not be securely managed.

Shadow Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has accused several of the independents and Greens MP Adam Bandt of irresponsibility for their decision not to support his private member's bill designed to increase transparency of the National Broadband Network and force the Government to conduct a cost/benefit analysis.

The Australian Greens may have again demonstrated their power with the Gillard Government, by squeezing the brakes on its plans to automatically privatise NBN Co once the national broadband network is completed, but they are not counting any chickens just yet.

Today's deal between Telstra and the NBN Co may reverse some of the damage done to the Australian telco industry when the Howard government privatised Telstra, say the Greens.
