App Annie just unveiled the App Annie Index, which will be a monthly report that provides revenue and download analysis of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. They have some pretty interesting things to report in their first month. The first of which is that Apple’s App Store generates four times more revenue than Google’s Play Store.
The mobile app economy continued to show impressive growth in 2012, with Apple’s App Store maintaining its course, while its rival, Google Play, was able to make some significant gains.
Apple still leads in terms of App Store revenue, according to a new report from app store analytics firm App Annie out today, but Google Play’s revenue is accelerating. From Q3 2012 to Q4 2012, Google Play revenue doubled, in a large part due to increases from Japan and South Korea, which, combined, contributed to close to half of Google Play revenue in Q4.

In advance of the expected new iPhone launch taking place on September 12th, app analytics firm App Annie has taken a look at some of the traction Apple’s Newsstand is seeing in terms of both revenue and downloads. According to its data, the U.S. is the top country when it comes to revenue generated by Newsstand applications, but China leads in downloads.
Illustrating how very, very hard it is to have a breakout hit in today’s mobile app stores, a report from app store analytics firm Distimo released today finds that only 2 percent of the top 250 publishers in the iPhone App Store are “newcomers,” versus just 3 percent in the Android store, Google Play.

Google’s Q3 earnings just leaked ahead of schedule, and it appears that Motorola revenues accounted for $2.58 billion of Google’s $14.10B revenue in the three-month period ending September 30. $1.78 billion was generated from the mobile segment alone, with $797 million credited to the home segment. In total, Motorola revenues account for 18 percent of Google’s Q3 report.
In Google’s earnings call today, the search giant’s CEO and co-founder Larry Page revealed that its mobile run rate is now $8 billion. That’s up from $2.5 billion a year ago.
