I installed only the base debian package and during installation I did not select any of GUI window manager, laptop, or system utilities.
So basically I'm running debian from command line, now I want to set up a GUI just for desktop. For this I tried installing gnome-core by
apt-get install gnome-core
But is shows gnome-core as a 400MB archive, is the core package so big?
Hey, long time no see.I have been trying to install debian sid on my laptop. First I installed testing with the intention of dist-upgrading to sid, but when it boots, I get a blurry screen with random, pixel-size, coloured dots.
I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on an old Dell Centrino/512mb machine that was running too slow with Windows to be useful. I am completely new to Linux and muddling my way through as well as I can. The machine still runs pretty slow on Ubuntu. So I loaded the Gnome shell and the classic (no effects) runs fairly well. Everything seemed to be fine up until this.
I have GNOME 2.30.2 that came with my default Debian installation.
I have the following Debian installation -
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.5 (squeeze)
Release: 6.0.5
Codename: squeeze
I want to install some other desktop environment. What is the procedure for installing KDE or Xfce on Debian 6?
I am running Unity 2D on a laptop with an integrated graphics card. The terminal is having trouble dealing with lots of text. For example, if i enter the following in a gnome-terminal:
while [ 1 ]; do echo 'hi'; done
the result is that my system is bogged down so much that it takes a few seconds to switch workspaces to or from the workspace with the offending terminal.
So, I have installed mono Lenny version and It is not the correct one i need. I need squeeze which I have managed to install but the Lenny inter fears with squeeze version. I removed squeeze and it still does the same message when running mono and I need to remove it but I do not know how to remove it because I had to install it in 'aptitude'.
The setup
I run a Debian Squeeze host that I use to build a multilanguage project (python, java, php...) and generate custom packages (debian and RPM) automatically (through jenkins)
The problem
The target distributions of those Debian packages are Etch, Lenny and Squeeze.
Hi all,
I am trying to install Fedora on an older laptop.
I would like remove my Gnome 2 to put on its place the Gnome 3, because I do not want to update to Debian Wheezy. How can I do that?
