http://askubuntu.com – This system worked fine until now: Ubuntu 12.04, Gnome-Shell, Nvidia GTX 460 Then I installed a plugin for Firefox ( proxtube.com ) which required a restart of FF. I clicked 'restart now' and the system froze immediately (not even ttys were accessible) After a restart gnome-shell does not start correctly: There are no panels, menu-bars, or something (except the background and the desktop folders). No gnome hotkeys as well. Starting the terminal creates it, but if I start another program I can't focus on the terminal again. I tried replacing gnome-shell. sometimes my gnome shell gets a weird bug. What I need to do then is to click e.g Ctrl + Alt + F3 When I am there i can login and then

killall gnome-shell

Then I go back to the first Ctrl + Alt + F1 (what do you call them tty1, tty2, tty3 ...

Are there any tricks for speeding up Gnome Shell, such as by disabling any extra "flashy" features?

I tried installing the Disable Window Animations Extension, but I haven't noticed any difference.

I've been using Gnome Shell under Ubuntu 11.10 for a few weeks now, and I generally like the new interface (and much prefer it over Unity).

The GNOME Shell redefines user interactions with the GNOME desktop. In particular, it offers new paradigms for launching applications, accessing documents, and organizing open windows in GNOME. Later, it will introduce a new applets eco-system and offer new solutions for other desktop features, such as notifications and contacts management.

Here is the situation. Changed unity shell to gnome shell. Installed the gnome tweak tool, installed the shell extension, themes, etc...everything i normally need to do that is installed

When i go to gnome tweak tool, and click on shell extension, the right list is empty

I've surfed the web and questions for answer.

Good news for those who like to use Gnome Shell on Ubuntu. Starting with Ubuntu 12.10, there will be separate Ubuntu 12.10 build based on vanilla Gnome Shell. The desktop interface will provide out of the box upstream Gnome 3 experience.

This Gnome Shell based Ubuntu Flavor is unnamed yet.
