According to the gnome-screensaver-command man page...
-l, --lock Tells the running screensaver process to lock the screen immediately

gnome-screensaver has been vastly simplified for major version 3 and no longer supplies the preferences dialog. It is now only useful for locking the screen and providing an unlock dialog.
I use 12.04 LTS at the moment and am able to install gnome-screensaver version 3.4.1-0ubuntu1 and add it to the XFCE session's application autostart list.
How to run a web browser as a screensaver
From that link, I can now set chromium-browser in ubuntu - gnome in kiosk mode (fullscreen mode) to display a web page (acting as screensaver). Everything is working fine.

I would like to replace gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver.
When I try to remove gnome-screensaver. It requires removing the meta-package gnome. Is there a way to disable it without removing the gnome package.

Hi all, I have gnome-screensaver on fedora 10 on an intel mac (laptop)
under power, screensaver works fine
on battery, the screensaver never activates...it will eventually go to sleep though.

I have uninstalled xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver from my FC17 install, and yet my screensaver still activates after ten or so minutes. That is, the screen goes blank, and I have to enter my password to get back in.
How do I disable my screensaver?
