Hello,
I recently installed Gnome Shell in Lubuntu 12.10. GNOME Classic works fine but GNOME 3 does not work. I do not see an error message. When I log into GNOME 3, I just get a screen that displays my wallpaper on it. There is no panel at the top and I am unable to launch any programs. Only notifications seem to work.
The Ubuntu GNOME Remix (UGR) is a new project that aims to provide a mostly pure GNOME desktop experience built from the Ubuntu repositories.
UGR 12.10 is the first release for this project and there are still a few minor issues, but it is a great alternative if anyone is interested in using Ubuntu with pure upstream GNOME experience, rather than stock Unity interface.

I am currently using GNOME Shell, Unity and GNOME Classic on Ubuntu 11.10.
I believe I got it working. I removed all of gnome, and because of some dependencies I had to remove other things to remove gnome's extras.
The GNOME Shell redefines user interactions with the GNOME desktop. In particular, it offers new paradigms for launching applications, accessing documents, and organizing open windows in GNOME. Later, it will introduce a new applets eco-system and offer new solutions for other desktop features, such as notifications and contacts management.
Is it possible to install GNOME 3 and switch between GNOME and Unity?
If I run sudo apt-get install gnome3 will it remove unity, or break it?
I wanted to make sure, before I install GNOME.
My goal is to try out GNOME, without removing Unity. Or just to be able to switch between them. I've heard some of my friends talk about it should be possible at login screen?

Hey all,
I recently came back to linux after a long break (5+ years). I installed lubuntu 11.10 on an old machine. By default it used lxde. I wanted to see what gnome and kde are like these days so I installed them through the package manager and rebooted. When I go to the login screen I have about 10 options on the list. None of the gnome options work.
This question is primarily for my own education. I first tried to install Fedora 18 choosing the Gnome desktop option, but the desktop was unusable after logging in (the appearance was of a font with mostly blank characters and occasional colored backgrounds). Later, I was successful at an install with the LXDE desktop choice.
