A few weeks back GNOME developers announced that GNOME 3.8 would no longer include the fallback mode. When users roared up, developers found a way to co-exist peacefully with them - a fallback-like mode made mostly of specialized extensions. Matthias Clasen blogged today of some of the progress of what he now dubs GNOME Legacy.
Even if GNOME 3.6 has not yet been released, the GNOME developers published some of the features that will be implemented in the next major release of the desktop environment, GNOME 3.8.
I've been on 13.04 since alpha and have gotten really used to gnome fallback with compiz again (it wasn't as well evolved when I switched to Gnome shell in the first place). I have set this up the way I like and am now afraid of the next or second next update dropping beloved fallback mode.
Moving forward, what are my best options in your eyes? Never update gnome from now on?
After installing F18, we got problems with remote logins: To have a usable GNOME 3 desktop, fallback mode has to be enabled (System Settings > Details > Graphics > Forced Fallback Mode => ON). Otherwise, the desktop (background, application windows, ...) is scrambled.
A quanto pare quello che era stato da troppo tempo rimandato, per le sorti di un desktop environment intero, saremo destinati a vederlo presto: a quanto pare infatti in GNOME 3.8 sarà rimossa la funzionalità di fallback, che consentiva, oltre che eseguire GNOME per chi non aveva hardware molto potente, anche di utilizzare GNOME in maniera “classica” per i non amanti di GNOME Shell.
