Former general counsel of the Software Freedom Law Centre, Karen Sandler, has been appointed as the executive director of the GNOME Foundation.
Board and Executive Director
By: Karen Sandler
The fourth quarter of 2011 was an exciting one for me as Executive Director. I keynoted the LATA event in Riga where I discussed GNOME 3 and software freedom and heard about GNU/Linux in Latvia. I also attended UDS, along with a number of other GNOME developers.
GNOME will be very present at FOSDEM 2012. The Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting (FOSDEM) is a major two-day event organized by volunteers to promote the widespread use of Free and Open Source software. It happens every year in Brussels, Belgium.
GNOME will have a booth at FOSDEM this year, with T-Shirts for sale, stickers and more.
As an undergraduate engineering student Karen Sandler was used to being the only woman in a class. At the time she didn't want to talk about why there weren't more women in technology, though, believing the attention would only make things worse. That attitude has changed over time, however, as she experienced sexism more directly.
The GNOME Project is widely recognized in the world of Linux as a leading developer community of a free and easy-to-use desktop environment. GNOME is part of the GNU/Linux Project. The label "GNU" is a recursive acronym meaning GNU's Not Unix, according to GNU.org.
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today announced the appointment of John Sullivan as its new executive director.

Due to being busy with other matters, Paul Cutler has decided to step down from The GNOME Foundation board of directors. Andreas Nilsson will replace him as Chairman and Bastien Nocera will take the role of Vice-Chairman.
As the board needs to consist of 7 members, Stormy Peters was asked by the board to step up and fill the empty seat.
