Hi,
I have a notebook with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 130M. Desktop effects were
working on OpenSUSE 11.2. Last week I upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.3, and
now desktop effects do not work. When I try to enable them, a box pops
up that says something like "desktop effects are not supported on your
hardware / configuration. Do you want to try anyway?".
I installed openSuse 11.3 (new installation), and all work fine.
But, the problems started when I wanted to install nvidia drivers.
I used two methods for that installation: A) By adding repository by hand:
YaST -> Software -> Software Repositories -> Add
Protocol: HTTP
Server Name: : download.nvidia.com
I installed OpenSuse Gnome version 64 bit on a HP laptop DV7 Intel Dual Core with nVidia 9600 GM card
All went well, until after I had installed the nVidia drivers from this page: NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE
Alright, I have and Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 and the desktop effects will not enable, I've tried both versions of the drives provided in the administration->hardware drivers and still nothing. I want to try the Nvidia drivers from their website but when I try to run them, it says X-server is running, close and try again. How exactly do I close x-server so I can run and install the drivers?
I just installed ubuntu 11.10 64bit on my laptop and everything worked fine until I installed the nvidia driver (for a GeForce GT 525M).
After I install the driver and reboot, the effects like snap windows do not work.
In order to work I have uninstalled the driver.
Is there a way for me to use the driver and still have the effects available?
Thanks for the help.
Newbie again,
I have a P4 2.4 Ghz machine with a nVidia geForce 6200 pci card, 256mb. I have tried at least 4 iterations of Mint and other Ubuntu variants, trying to find a distro that will install the proper drivers that will enable desktop effects and run compiz.
Hello everybody,
i just installed opensuse 11.3 (after being on Mint for couple of years) and really impressed with stability compared to latest Mint 9/Ubuntu10.04.
the only issue I have now is I can't turn on desktop effects neither in KDE nor in Gnome.
This guide will work for installing the ATi Drivers on OpenSuSE 11.0, 11.1 & 11.2
