Hi guys,
I was working with VirtualBox, among other applications, and accidentally used Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill the host X server and I immediately ran startx again, only to find that my cursor, favourites, mouse sensitivity... had all reset to their 'factory' defaults.
Hi all.
I am using windows XP as my host machine and vmware workstation 6 to install and run RHEL 5. I have set the inittab to runlevel 5. While i am in gnome, i tried pressing
Ctrl-Alt-F3 and nothing happens. I searched the net and found that i should do this
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-F3. It worked and kinda throwed me to shell mode.
Hi, I'm installing 12.04 on a new machine. I've been using 8.04. In 8.04 I accessed my windows manager (either gnome or fvwm) from the command line, using startx. In this setup I was able to set a number of environment variables, which were utilized in my startup script. But 12.04 boots to a GUI, which is nice, but I can't set my environment variables.
Hi all!
I think I've made a mess on my LINUX computer. It was freezed so I tried to restart it, however then the mouse wasn't working so I tried some strange combination of keys like ctrl alt f4, but not sure about it, and it all went black like if I just had a terminal interface.
I have a strange problem and after googling around I haven't found a solution...
When I boot to the desktop manager (kdm in my case) I am able to use tty consoles by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Fn. If I next log into XFCE I am still able to use them and everything is fine.
But if I log into Gnome the consoles are not available anymore.
Hi!
So, I am having difficulty understanding what I need to do or if this can be done at all..
I would like to boot into the command line for my Linux system but, still have access to the different environments as well (KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, etc) but I don't know how to do that using startx.
I normally prefer my system to boot in text mode and manually start Gnome with startx but if I do that with Gnome 3.6.1, I get many errors and a basically unusable operating system. After installing gdm however, Gnome works perfectly fine again. Why is that and how can I return to my startx?
sometimes my gnome shell gets a weird bug. What I need to do then is to click e.g Ctrl + Alt + F3 When I am there i can login and then
killall gnome-shell
Then I go back to the first Ctrl + Alt + F1 (what do you call them tty1, tty2, tty3 ...
