Generic vesa driver and widescreen - how?

http://www.linuxquestions.org – So my friend got new laptop with mobility radeon 5470. It's not supported by neither free nor proprietary drivers, so he is stuck with vesa - correct me if I'm wrong. How can he achieve 1366x768 - resolution native for his lcd panel? Currently we're limited to 4:3, up to 1024x768 - scales ugly. Preferred Ubuntu solutions, but if we'll be certain some other distro can just do it, he may switch. However, it looks like a generic problem. (HowTos)
