I've been looking for a way to monitor my data connection; not the usage but the availability of the connection itself. In short, my data connection has to be reliable so I can receive alerts for my job. I want to be alerted and even awaken if my data connection drops for any reason.
If this is a dumb question I apologize. I've had the original HTC Incredible for the last two years and just got a Samsung Stratosphere yesterday.
Does this phone require you to have the data connection on constantly in order to be able to send/receive pics by text? I am not able to send/receive pictures by text unless I have the data connection on.
EDIT: To clarify, I'm asking if it's possible to configure a system such that no identifiable data is transferred before the connection is secured with a VPN, and to automatically stop any data from being transferred if that connection to the VPN is severed.
I misspoke that I'd connect to the VPN first and Internet second . . .

I have created a client-server application that the two parties communicate using a socket connection and input/output streams to send/receive data. It all works great but only if I have just one activity that uses the connection.
