When I click a user name on the login screen, the other ones disappear but the password prompt never shows up. It stays this way for a few seconds, then comes back to the original state with the list of users.
I've ran a yum update on my CentOS 5.8 box and now I am unable to log into the console as root. Basically what happens is I receive the login prompt, enter the correct username and password, and am immediately spit back to the login prompt.
I have asked this elsewhere and gotten absolutely nowhere.
Yesterday while at the login screen for 11.10 I stupidly chose "Recovery Console" from the little gear menu. What happened after that is that a small terminal window opened in the top left of my screen. At this point the keyboard would not enter anything.
Yesterday I was working on my own extension for gnome and my computer froze. I could switch to other virtual consoles using Alt+Ctrl+F(2) but I couldn't figure out how to restart gdm. On debian I could do a "service restart gdm3", but couldn't find the equivalent systemd command.
