http://serverfault.com – Are there any utilities that will record what the permissions of a file or folders were originally, set the permissions to exclusive access by the administrator, and then when the administrator is done working with the file or folders set the permissions back to what was recorded? Hi All,

I have an ftp process that is connecting to a Solaris server and pushing files into a directory. The default file permissions are rw-r--r-- . I want the file permissions to be rw-rw-r--. How can I configure the directory so any file created there will have the permissions rw-rw-r-- ?

*Note the permissions on the directory are drwxrwxr-x

The executable files that gcc creates have execution permissions

-rwxrwxr-x

which are different than the permissions that the source file has.

-rw-rw-r--

How does gcc set these permissions ?

I have an existing Windows File server running Windows 2003 R2. I want to upgrade this to windows 2008 R2.

After some play around with rooted devices, I got stuck on the files. Let's say we have a file somewhere in the root folder which I want to read/write from my application.

Currently, if I want to change permissions, I have to log in via remote desktop and do it from Windows Explorer, but I'm searching for simpler ways. (for example, a web based file manager)

Do you know any methods (web based file managers, etc.) to allow me changing permissions of files and folders without having to use remote desktop?

I want to make my ubuntu 12.04 home server a little more secure. Actually I would like to have paranoid security. For starters I would like to change the default permissions under the / folder.

I think I have screwed up my permissions in Ubuntu.

I am using my server to run PHP. I recently ran across a problem where PHP could not create directories in the var/www-directory, so I searched around on the internet.
