There seems to be differing opnions as to under what folder you need to put your mp3 or whatever other format you want to use as custom ringtone, notification etc (e.g. one says sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ another says sdcard/ringtones) and neither worked for me.
Does anyone know how to get my own mp3s to show up under setting when I want to pick the ringtone or notification sounds?

Ive tried moving the mp3 file to System/media/audio/ringtones manualy because i thought that would make it stick but no, after every reboot it goes back to the Samsung theme tune.
Also i just noticed, when i go to Settings, Sound, Device Ringtone and tap Media Storage, my mp3 isnt in the ringtone list.
So I added about a hundred various ringtones and sounds to these folders:
/system/media/audio/ringtones
/system/media/audio/notifications
But when I go to my menu/sounds to select a new ringtone or notification sound, all the files I added are sitting there in duplicates or triplicates.
Or they show up with weird Chinese characters.
But when I use Root Explorer, they all show up as single
Hoping someone can help me get my head around using these .nomedia files for audio in ICS - I have a bunch of ringtones etc. sitting in the media/audio/.. folders with a .nomedia file at the top level so these audio files don't show up in my music player, but by having that file there, I can no longer set them as my ringtone/alarm/notification.
So I had this phone a while now, and I had downloaded some ringtones, just a few from Myxer. Well, I ended up losing the micro sd card that I dad have in my phone, so I replaced it. Ever since then, aside from my files all being gone, and almost all the apps I had downloaded, now it's really being all spazzy.
I open up "messages" then hit the "settings" option, then scroll down and "notifications" is checked and I then select my ringtone for whenever I receive a text message. However, upon receiving a text message, I hear the ringtone I selected, but immediately following the selected ringtone, I get another ringtone sound.
