Fedora 17 hangs at "fireworks" splash page - no login

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – Hi, I got Fedora 17 (X86_64) installed on my Toshiba C855-S5308 laptop, but when I boot, it gets to the splash page with the "Fireworks", but no login box appears. Also, I don't have any networking, either hardwire/ethernet or wireless. I *can* get into text mode using Ctrl-Alt-F2, and I've disabled SeLinux, but still don't get the login box after rebooting. I don't see anything (to me) suspicious in /var/log/messages, so I'm really kind of stuck on this. I've seen some posts, about possible kernel problems and to do yum install, but as I said, I don't have any networ (HowTos)
