FC 16 kernel update problem

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – I did a 'yum update' and it installed a new kernel (version 3.4.2-x86_64) along with a bunch of other updates. During the update the running kernel had a catastrophic error and rebooted. The problem is there is no initramfs file for the new kernel so it crashes on trying to boot up. The older kernels still boot up but I can't get the NVidia drivers to install on any of them so I have no Xwindow capability. The driver install software is not providing any real info about why it won't install. I suspect an update of gcc has made it incompatible with the older kernels. I tried 'yum rein (HowTos)

I made a clean installed of Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit without a problem. It came with kernel version 3.0.0.12. I rebooted twice with no problem. After this I applied all the recommended updates from "Update Manager" including the kernel version 3.0.0.15. After this the system doesn't start anymore in normal boot mode.

I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere, but after looking though the first 100+ search results, I can't seem to find it.

After a kernel update today, I noticed that new kernels are not being added to my grub menu.lst (so consequently, I was running an older kernel).

recently I have downloaded updates for my fedora 18 x86_64 installation and one of them was a kernel update. if I try to boot new kernel from grub menu it stalls at a black screen and I have to hard reset. If I choose the older kernel boots fine. I think it is issue with proprietary drivers for nvidia but thats just speculation.

Hi, I am using f 12. Every time I update software, a new tab appears in the boot menu screen to access both previous and new kernels. I thinks this will be a problem after 10 or more updates. Can I remove older kernel versions in order to save hard disk? I think dumping of all versions of kernel eat my hard disk.

I've just installed 12.04LTS on my relatively new desktop. The system is set to duel boot with Windows 8, uses UEFI, and secure boot is enabled. It seems to be working well now as long as I use a kernel version that is signed with Canonical's UEFI signing key. The repositories have both signed and unsigned versions of kernels available but Update Manager seems to pick the unsigned versions.

In the distro I'm most familiar with -- ALTLinux, a command like apt-get install kernel-image-std-def#3.0....

I had just got Ubuntu (first timer to Ubuntu so be very descriptive). I think there a problem with my Nvida update it won't let me update it. This is the name of the update in update manager NVIDIA binary xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library.

After install of F16 all was well but ran a yum update and rebooted to the newer (3.4.xxx x86_64) kernel and screen goes blank after grub menu. Could choose the original F16 (3.1.xxx_x86_64) kernel at grub and it would boot fine.

I decided to give F17 a try... After a clean F17 installation all is working fine... Then run yum update and reboot into latest kernel...

Hi all, I have updated to kernel 3.50 on Desktop 12.04.1(As well as my server, also running 12.04.1 - well it says 12.04.2 now.) and now there is an update to the old 3.2 kernel.
