  Facebook’s Messenger app has loosened its chains a little and is on its way to being a viable replacement to standard SMS.

A lot of news coming out of Facebook today, it seems. This afternoon, the social network is also announcing a series of updates for Android users, which include improvements to both the Facebook for Android and Facebook Messenger apps.

Facebook is slowly beefing up the capabilities of its Messenger app as it moves to combat the rise of free messaging apps like Whatsapp, Viber and Line. Today it’s taking another baby step by expanding VoIP calling to U.K. users of its iOS app, following its initial test of the feature in Canada in January, which was soon followed by a U.S.

Today Facebook is introducing texting support for its Messenger application for Android. A thorough redesign has transformed the old, tired inbox into a full-fledged SMS app. As you swipe to the left, a list of available users is given, which will allow you to directly send a message over your carrier’s cellular network.

Facebook just launched a new version of its Messenger app for iOS. Messenger, the company’s stand-alone chat app, got a bit of a user interface refresh with this update, as well as a speed boost and official support for iOS 6 and the iPhone 5′s larger display.

In was trying to get Facebook home and saw this over at XDA so all credit to them, as this is not my work. I just thought I'd share.

1. Get rid of Facebook on your phone. This includes messenger. 2. Download the file below, and unzip it. 3. Install both apps, making sure unknown sources is checked in settings. 4. Enjoy! :D

How does Facebook know what features are good enough for its main smartphone apps? It tests them on the power users of its standalone apps Camera and Messenger.

Take a look at that “reach friends wherever they are now” image to the left. What’s missing between the iPhone and the laptop? Ding ding ding! You’re right! A tablet. Okay, I’m sure it was obvious. In fact, many of you may have already assumed that Facebook has a version of its Messenger for iPad.

SMS Feature not working on Facebook Messenger, got the Sprint version and have cleared data and reinstalled several times with no luck. The is zero settings that mention enabling it like it should!
