AMD has released a new Catalyst 12.10 driver for Linux. I was hoping that with with catalyst 12.10, legacy drivers (version 12.6) will be updated to support xorg 1.13 (required for Ubuntu 12.10).
However, this release seems to be a complete joke.
Latest proprietary AMD Catalyst driver version 12.9 cannot be used with Ubuntu 12.10 If you have a AMD Radeon HD 2xxx-4xxx series card.
Drivers for these cards are now available in a separate branch called legacy series. Unfortunately these legacy drivers (version 12.6) have not been updated to work with Ubuntu 12.10.
AMD has recently dropped support for cards in series HD 2xxx-4xxx. Catalyst drivers for these cards are now available in a different branch, called Legacy series. Legacy drivers won't receive any new feature updates from AMD.
Proprietary fglrx drivers for these legacy cards are not compatible with Quantal.

So here's the problem. I have a rather old laptop, bought it in 2007. It's an Acer Aspire 5100-5023 if that means anything to anyone. It has an integrated graphics card, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100. ATI (I guess AMD now) no longer provides legacy support for this card.
Now I have Ubuntu 12.10. It has xorg 1.13. Unity wont run correctly with out that version of xorg.
When I've upgraded to xorg-server-1.13.1 keyboard stopped functioning.
I then downgrade to xorg-server-1.12.4 and xorg-drivers-1.12 and it works now.
What's the problem?

After reboot, windows manager not start up and freeze at boot.

Unfortunately, I did not save the Xorg.0.log of fglrx. So I only wrote what I remember because I had to reinstall the xf86-video-ati drivers to have X working.I have only one problem with Radeon/KMS/Xorg drivers in EFI and BIOS modes. When I go in full screen mode (Ctrl_Alt+f) with qemu(-kvm), I get a white/black screen flicking. I have to Control-Backspace-Delete and go back to console.
You might have read that catalyst was removing support for any HD4xxx card or below. With support for xorg 1.12 coming in catalyst 12.6, the plan for Chakra was to finally update xorg, and drop support for these cards.Today though, it was announced, there is a first beta release for catalyst-legacy. It is packaged right away, to see how well it functions, so the move to xorg 1.12 can s
