Eye of GNOME, the official image viewer for the GNOME Desktop environment which can support a variety of image file formats, has reached version 3.7.1.
Eye of GNOME 3.7.1 can be used to view single image files, as well as large image collections and if the appropriate plugins are installed on the system, the application will be able to open even more image formats.
Highlights of Eye of GNOME 3.7
In 12.04, can the image format for Screenshot be jpeg? I change the file name to save to to be ended with ".jpg", but Gnome image viewer seems not be able to open it saying
Error interpreting JPEG image file (Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x89
0x50)
One example image is here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13029929/c1p18.jpg
Is it a true jpeg image file?
Thanks!
If you need a small, lightweight DWG viewer application, you can use this DWGSee DWG Viewer Pro 2011. This software lets you browse, view and measure the DXF, DWG Autocad file formats. You can also print the DXF and DWG using this DWGSee DWG Viewer Pro version 2.87.
F12 current updates. The Gnome Desktop Background images are compressed in the horizontal axis enough to make a cessna 182 look like a disney cartoon. I am running 1280X1084 75 hertz update rate. The Gnome Image Viewer gives a correct image. The image I am running had to be stretched to fill the screen. I suspect the stretching algorithm is at fault. Is this a bug that need reporting?
When it comes to image viewers, one app is not always hands-down better than others. It is rare to find an image viewing tool that has every feature stockpiled on your wish list. So having a collection of go-to viewing tools to meet a variety of graphics needs is a better strategy. That said, the Geeqie Image Viewer goes a long way in keeping that set of viewing tools to a minimum.
"Large" images render my system completely unresponsive when opened in the GNOME image viewer (eog) or Firefox. 3264x2448 pixels, in my case.
In my entomological work I often need to compare two images of bugs side-by-side.
Comparisons are surprisingly hard to do with either of the image viewers I normally use, namely Eye of Gnome and Ristretto. First I open two instances of the viewer and adjust their window sizes and positions for easy side-by-side comparison.
Many images are only partially loading in the default Image Viewer application. All of the problematic files seem to be .jpg's and they all open in Gimp just fine.
I've looked around for similar threads and launchpad entries, but I can't seem to find anything.
gThumb is one of the best image viewer and browser applications available for the GNOME Desktop. I particularly like its adeptness in handling both still photography and videos. That is an unusual pairing for an image viewer on any platform. You are not likely to find this combination, or at least one that works so seamlessly, in other image viewers.
