Hi!
After upgrading ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, pulseaudio says that my Toshiba Multimedia Center soundcard is 4.0, but this is fake, because it's 5.1 surround sound card.
I'm tired by searching for good pulseaudio/alsa config, so I'm looking for external sound card fully working with Ubuntu.
My preferences:
* USB or ExpressCard interface
I have a 5.1 Surround Headset (Speedlink Medusa NX) which is plugged in to my 7.1 (I think) Onboard Sound card. The Headset does have a USB plug, but I think that one is only used for getting electricity.
My computer also has some front jacks which are working perfectly fine. My normal speakers are plugged in here.
I can't see my Headset in the "System Settings -> Sound -> Output" area.
I have this card, but, I set it up a long time ago and I forget things quickly. Anyway, I'll try to help until someone else comes along.The first thing I would do is go into bios and disable the onboard soundcard. This will make 100% sure the other soundcard is not causing you a problem.
It's been two days I have tried to make this work. I have 3 sound output : regular audio jack from my soundcard, USB MOTU soundcard, USB Logitech speakers. The latter two seem not to be detected at all. The first seems to be detected but still no sound. I have uninstalled and reinstalled PulseAudio and AlsaMixer according to some tip on a blog but it did not work either.
Weird Sound Card Problem
I have a HP IQ504 computer with a AD1984B sound card, the OS recognizes the soundcard yet it can't play audio unless it has headphones plugged-in.

Besides the problem in this thread, I have one other.
